Zuiderzee Museum shows Dutch fashion of bygone and present days

The exhibition Gone with the Wind in the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen
(22 March - 22 November 2009) shows work by dozens of high-profile Dutch designers of fashion, jewellery and accessories, stylists, photographers and illustrators. Together they give an inspiring picture of the wealth of ideas latent in the Dutch world of fashion and how it relates to the Dutch dress tradition. The renowned fashion designers Alexander van Slobbe and Francisco van Benthum act as guest curators.

In Gone with the Wind the creative ideas of the Dutch world of fashion are central. In a unique way this exhibition combines contemporary designs with traditional costumes and objects from the Museum collection. At twenty locations in the Museum and the Museum Park, new and old designs visualize typically Dutch themes, such as the 'Orange' festivities in honour of the Royal Family and the use of bright floral patterns in traditional costumes. In the Bontekoe's Cabin Boys room, Dutch designers of men's fashion such as Francisco van Benthum, Lucas Ossendrijver (Lanvin) and Ivo Mittelmeijer display a modern vision on tradional men's wear. In the Staphorst Drama room designer Mark Lentelink presents garments from traditional costume and from the international world of fashion where folding is central, as it once was in Staphorst. Illustrators Piet Paris and Peter Jeroense have designed variations on the typically Dutch tile.

From craft to abstraction
Gone with the Wind is perfectly in tune with the Museum's 2009 theme: from craft to abstraction. The Zuiderzee Museum has one of the largest collections of traditional costumes in this country, consisting of clothing, accessories and jewellery. The designs of these costumes often had a highly craftsmanlike and traditional character. Successful designers embroider on that tradition and apply traditional techniques in a modern, more abstract manner. This way the designs acquire the 'timelessness' that is typical of Dutch (fashion) design. High-class illustrations of this are the collections now owned by the Museum by Viktor & Rolf (2007), Alexander van Slobbe (2007) and Francisco van Benthum (2008).

Guest curators
Alexander van Slobbe
In the history of Dutch fashion Alexander van Slobbe (Schiedam, 1959) has a unique place as the initiator of an originally Dutch design concept. His reputation as a 'modernist' is based on his attention for the intrinsic aspects of the garment, such as the properties of the material, the manual finish and the physical sensation of design. He was awarded various Dutch prizes for his complete work that had never before been awarded to fashion designers, such as the 2003 prize of the Prince Bernhard Arts Fund.

Francisco van Benthum
Francisco van Benthum (Boxmeer, 1972) launched his first own men's label in 2003. His vision as a designer is clearly seen in his elegant collection, which takes the traditional menswear wardrobe as a starting point. He gave his first presentation in Paris under his own name in June 2008. For his work he was awarded two prizes in Hyères, France, during the international Festival des Arts de la Mode.

Anniversary event
Gone with the Wind is the extensive closing exhibition of the anniversary events organized on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen. The Museum's new approach is central in this context. Of old our cultural-historical museum has preserved the past of the Zuiderzee, emphasizing the period from 1880 to 1932. This period and region have now been abandoned. The Museum reaches out into the world and shows how Dutch traditions and history tend to return in present-day Dutch art, culture, design and heritage. After all, it is the present that determines the significance of the past. The Zuiderzee Museum presents Dutch art, culture and heritage at the interface of land and water. Exhibitions and events demonstrate interrelationships between the collection and current developments. Classic Dutch themes are addressed in surprising ways.
